A Blissful Life 6/18/24: Growing From Mistakes
“A problem properly stated is half solved.” –John Dewey “You’re either part of the solution or you’re part of the problem.” –Eldridge Cleaver
Encountering problems is part of life. Once you see them, how long do you let them go on? Do you sweep them under the rug and try to unsee them for some time before fully acknowledging that they exist? Do you wait until the problem becomes so big that you are forced to handle it? These are all fear-based reactions.
In my own experience, I have learned that pretending a problem doesn’t exist only makes it grow larger. The sooner we recognize and admit a problem, the easier it is to solve. And, as John Dewey says above, properly stating the problem is already half of the solution.
It is impossible to start anywhere but here. When we accept ourselves and our life circumstances exactly as we and they are, we can move forward with integrity. Sometimes, landing in the present moment and fully accepting what’s here can be very humbling. The ego is scared to be humbled, which can make your innate reaction to resist. But, when you take a deep breath, soften, and land with acknowledgement and acceptance, it actually allows you to take greater ownership over your life– and that feels really good.
As long as we are alive there will be lessons to be learned. If you ever feel like you are done learning, get ready because there is probably a huge life lesson right around the bend. This isn’t something to be scared of– it’s part of life. But, don’t fight it. Stay humble and things won’t shake you as hard. When we make a mistake or experience hardship, it is an opportunity to become a better person, more equipped for what comes next.
There is nothing wrong with making a mistake, but do your best to not make that same mistake multiple times. Study the root of the problem and take aware action to the best of your ability so that you can grow from your errors. Have peace of mind when you know in your heart that you are trying your best, and if the next day you realize that you can do better, you will do better.
Sometimes we can get really down on ourselves when we make a mistake or create a problem. Instead of beating yourself up over it, take a breath and get yourself present. Let yourself feel whatever you are feeling, and let those strong emotions ground and humble you. From that grounded, humble place, open yourself to learning a new way of doing things. Stay quiet and listen– become the student, motivated to do better next time. When we truly learn from a mistake, the mistake is actually a gift because it has a beneficial effect on our future and the future of others who are affected by our actions.
